OVERCOMING MATH ANXIETY THE KINETIC MATH WAY

Does your child cringe when he/she is about to attend a Math class?

Is he/she always worried about being called to recite Math class?

Does your child fear Math test more than any other kind of test?

Does he/she tend to zone out in Math class?

Does he/she dread doing Math tasks?

Does he/she worry about not being able to keep up with the rest of the class in Math?

If your child has this strong emotional reaction to Mathematics, he/she might be suffering from Math anxiety. Math anxiety is an intense emotional feeling of anxiety that people have about their ability to understand and do Mathematics. People who feel tension, apprehension and fear of situations involving Math are said to have Math anxiety.

Math anxiety may start when children are quite young. This is usually caused by a student’s negative experience with math. This may be related to getting a low grade in math, being embarrassed in Math class, unpleasant experience with the math teacher, or being punished by a parent or teacher for failing to master a math concept.

Math anxiety is an emotional, rather than an intellectual problem. However, math anxiety interferes with the person’s ability to do math tasks, thus, leading to poor performance in Math. Because math anxiety can reduce math competence, it is crucial that parents detect and address this as soon as possible.

One way to combat math anxiety is to provide the child a safe venue to learn Math. Kinetic Math Enrichment Center (link to the main page) recognizes this need which is why it offers one-on-one and group math sessions (1:3 teacher-student ratio) in a child-friendly learning space.

Kinetic Math is also known for its energizing and engaging learning activities which help students develop numerical fluency, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while enjoying Math.

Kinetic Math’s Math Wizards Summer Camp

Is your child math-ready for the BIG SCHOOL?

Is your child’s mathematical ability at par with kids his age?

Below is a guide to some basic math milestones for children in their early years:

3 years old 4 years old 5 years old
·         Can identify basic shapes

·         Can sort things by color, size or shape

·         Understands the concept of size

·         Knows the primary colors

·         Can recite number words 1-10

·         Knows that when one item is taken away from a set of 2 items, one item is left

·         Knows that when one item is added to a set of 2 items, there should be 3 items altogether

·         Learns to pick out the “first” and the “last” person in a line

·         Can identify the largest or highest in a set of pictures

·         Can count up to 20

·         Can gibe correct answers to addition and subtraction problems involving small quantities (ex 1+2=3 and 3-2=1) by using manipulatives or pictures

·         Can count from at least 1-20 and identify numbers 1-10

·         Begins to understand volume and can identify the container that holds the most

·         Understands night and day and their relation to time

·         Begins to understand the concept of time and some begin to tell the time

·         Understands what a calendar is

·         Understands and can label the value of different coins

·         Knows what it means to divide something in half using “one for you, one form me” strategy

·         Knows the names of 4-8 colors and can point them out

·         Can count backwards from 5

·         Understands and uses ordinal terms: first, second, third, fourth and fifth

·         Using manipulatives and pictures, can find the answer to simple addition and subtraction word problems that total up to 10.

·         Can skip-count by 10

Remember, these milestones are a general guide. Some children reach them early and some reach them later. This summer, provide your child venue to learn the developmentally appropriate math skills for his age. Let him join Kinetic Math Enrichment Center’s Math Wizards Summer Camp. Math Wizards Summer Camp is a summer course for children aged 3-5 years old. This program aims to teach Math concepts in a systematic, engaging and fun way! Kinetic Math’s Mastering Fractions Summer Program

Children gain some basic understanding of fractions when children come to school. They understand the concept of half or equal sharing by counting one for you, one for you… Then, in the early grades, they get to learn formally what a fraction is and how one whole, one-half and one-fourth looks like.

However, when they get to the third and fourth grade, they are taught more complex concepts and skills about fractions. They go beyond what a numerator and denominator means and beyond naming or identifying fractions. Children are now introduced to fraction arithmetic- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions.

Many students do poorly in this topic in Math. Children often commit mistakes on the procedures because they rely on rote memorization of the steps rather than understanding the underlying concepts. Other students view fractions as meaningless symbols. Some view numerators and denominators as separate numbers rather that a unified whole.

A deep and enduring understanding of fractions is an important stepping stone for learning other math concepts such as decimals, percentage, ratio, and probability. It is likewise essential for learning algebra, geometry and other aspects of higher math.

To help students excel in Fractions next school year, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center is offering Mastering Fractions Summer Program. This program will provide a step-by-step introduction to fractions through a visual and conceptual approach. It will help students visualize and conceptualize fractions and calculate and solve word problems using them. This course will tackle adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. It will likewise teach the students how to draw fraction bar models which are powerful tools in solving multi-step fraction word problems.

Kinetic Math’s Integers and Algebra Summer Course

Why do many high school students fail or get low grades in Math?

Why do some students have difficulty answering entrance test questions in Math?

One of the many culprits for the abovementioned difficulties is the poor basic foundational knowledge and skills in algebra and integers. Understanding algebra and integers are necessary to solve equations.

Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses numbers and letters that represent numbers. Algebra strengthens logic skills and introduces abstract thinking. In algebra, students must understand that symbols such as x and y stand for numbers that vary and that these symbols can be used in solving real-life and mathematical problems.

In integers, on the other hand, students deal with zero, positive and negative whole numbers. It is very important to learn this because we use integers in our daily lives- weather, finances, sports, geography and science. Since performing operations on integers involve signs of the numbers and signs of operations, some students struggle in remembering the rules and procedure for certain problems or equations.

This summer, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center will offer the Integers and Algebra Summer Course. Integers & Algebra Summer Course aims to help students transition from the visual model method to the abstract concepts of integers and algebra. In this course, students will learn about integers and build on the knowledge to develop skills in algebra. This will train the students to think and reason logically, orderly and abstractly.

Kinetic Math’s Bar Model Method Training Camp

Did your child have difficulty in solving math word problems this school year or for the past school years?

Did your child do well in other items of the Math test except for those that involve word problems?

Is your child transferring to a school that has a Singapore Math curriculum?

Do you want to prepare your child for more complex word problems next school year?

Did your child get the correct computation but wrong bar models in the Math homework/quiz/ exam?

Do you want to help your child solve word problems using the bar models but do not know how to do so?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center, has a solution for your problem. This summer, Kinetic Math will offer once again its most sought after math summer program— the Bar Model Method Training Camp.

The Bar Model Method Training Camp will teach the students how to solve word problems using the bar model method. The bar model method is a systematic method of representing word problems and number relationships using rectangular bars. This helps children visualize the problem, know which operation/s to perform and view all problems from an algebraic perspective beginning in early elementary levels.

To register your child for the Bar Model Method Training Camp, you may contact or visit the Kinetic Math Center near you.
